Differences between Medicare Advantage (Part C) & Medicare Supplements
Medicare Advantage are all in one, comprehensive plans. You get one ID card and your Medicare plan handles all beneficiary administration and claims processing. Medicare Supplement plans on the other hand, work with Original Medicare and is secondary to it. Original Medicare pays its share of covered services before the supplement begins to pay.
Many Medicare Advantage plans do not cost anything outside of your monthly Part B premium to social security monthly. Medicare supplement plans on the other hand, require additional monthly costs over your monthly Part B premium.
Most Medicare Advantage plans come packaged with added value benefits, including but not limited to, dental, eyewear, over the counter benefits, free gym memberships, & even Part B premium givebacks to put money back into your social security benefit check.
Many Medicare Advantage plans come with Part D prescription drug coverage included. These are also known as MAPD plans. Medigap plans do NOT come packaged with prescription drug coverage, so you need to buy a Part D prescription drug plan. Please note, not all MA plans includes prescription drug coverage, so it’s important to check with the plan you’re considering to be certain its included.
MA plans have provider networks. In contrast, Medicare supplement plans do not. If considering a Part C plan, it’s important to assess a plans provider network to be sure it will adequately meet your needs.
Under law, benefits offered under a MA plan, must be at a minimum, equal to, if not better than the benefits under Original Medicare.
Medicare beneficiaries must generally continue to pay their monthly Part B premium to stay enrolled in their Medicare Advantage plan.
